Alot of people have come up to me for advice on how to train this part of the body and that part of the body and how to lose fat here and lose fat there. However whenever I tell them how to do so, they look at me as though I have just told them that the Earth revolves around the moon.
I find it very excruciating that there are some people who spend months or years trying to achieve their physical goals but give up after not seeing results because they have been doing the wrong things or the less efficient things all the while. And some people are just afraid of achieving the goals they don't want to achieve by following a prescribed programme because of their misunderstandings and disbelief. So I will try here to set things straight about the common misconceptions and the dos and don'ts of fitness and training.
#1 There is no such thing as training for muscular "DEFINITION"
Many people have the conception that there are 2 methods of weight training - 1)Mass building and 2)Definition training. I personally had been a believer of that when I first picked up the dumbbell. Right now, I know that is bullcrap. There is no such thing as training for definition. No such thing as low reps-mass building, high reps-definition training. The muscle only responds to resistance in 1 way - expansion of muscle fibres causing muscular hypertrophy. There is no way that a muscle can become more defined by high reps. Any person with a fair bit of physiological knowledge will attest to that. The reason why some people look defined is because they have low body fat percentages. That is to say, that the only way to be defined is to lose body fat. Look at it in another angle. A person does heavy weights for say 6 or 8 reps. This is considered training at low reps. Although his reps may be low, but the weights are heavy. The calories he or she burns during the set will be high. Another person does lighter weights for 20 reps. Although he or she does more reps, but the weight is lighter than the one who does low reps. In that sense, the calories the high reps person burn will be similar, if not lower than the one with high reps. So these 2 methods are essentially the same in caloric terms. Want to be defined? Lose some fat.
#2 There is no such thing as spot reduction
Many people complain about having big tummies or having fat around their bellies. They say they do situps or crunches but it does not help. My reaction - OF COURSE IT DOES NOT HELP. If you want to lose fat around your belly, you have to lose fat everywhere. When your body burns fat, it does not think to itself, "oh hey, the belly is fatter, I'll take more fat from there". The body burns fat from all around. You can spot reduce fat from a particular area. And doing situps and crunches while there is still fat on the belly will only cause muscular hypertrophy of the abs, which may push out the fat covering it even more, making the belly look bigger. So, you want to have washboard abs, then lose the fats.
#3 Compound movements are safe when done correctly and much more effective than isolation exercises
Many people who want to gain muscle mass do alot of isolation exercises. You see tons of them with 12 inch arms religiously doing their concentration curls and dumbell flys every single time they go into the gym. Isolation exercises may add abit of mass at the beginning, but compound movements pack on tons more mass because they incorporate a much higher proportion of muscle in to the reps. Because of this, tons more testosterone will be released by the body leading to greater muscle growth.
#4 Girls who want better bodies should do weight training
Many girls are afraid of lifting weights because they are afraid of packing on tons of muscle. That is absolutely untrue, unless the person is taking anabolic steroids. Most girls simply do not have enough testosterone in them for them to gain any considerable muscle to be like the bodybuilders. I cannot remember the exact figures, but I believe females generally have less testosterone than males by a factor of at least a hundred. Besides, muscle tissues have much hihger basal metabolic rates than fats, which means that a person with a hihger amount of muscle tissue will burn more calories at rest than one who has a lesser amount of muscle. Therefore, a person who does resistance/weight trainig will burn more calories thus lose more fats than one who does not do resistance/weight training.

Am listening to jack johnson and his songs just seem to warm me up. Especially this.
Do you remember when we first met I sure do It was some time In early September You were lazy about it You made me wait around I was so crazy about you I didn't mind So I was late for class I locked my bike to yours It wasn't hard to find You painted flowers on Guess that I was afraid That if you rode away You might not roll back My direction real soon Well I was crazy about you then And now the craziest thing of all Over 10 years have gone by And your still mine We're locked in time Lets rewind
Do you remember When we first moved in together The piano took up the living room You'd play me boogie woogie I played you love songs You'd say we're playing house Now you still say we are We build our get away Up in a tree we found We felt so far away Though we were still in town I remember watching That old tree burn down I took a picture that I don't like to look at
Well all these times They come and go Alone don't seem so long Over 10 years have gone by We cant rewind We're locked in time But your still mine
Do you remember? |

You know, who i am with truly determines the way i behave at that particular point of time. I have different groups of friends and really, they are all so damned different. Their characters and the whole dynamics of the different groups span over such a huge range, i get confused sometimes. The thing is, i do behave differently when im with these different people, and really i am not trying to gain acceptance by doing what they do and talking their talk. I guess its just being you know politically correct in a certain way. Point is, i am who i am in front of everybody, but there is a deeper side that nobody sees. Well actually afew do, only under certain instances. I may say things which arent exactly pleasing to somebody, or i may say things that dont reflect well on my character, but hey, words dont form a person's character, at least not when you know a person well. Sadly, judgements are made in an instant on shallow words and deeds. Shame on us all who do that. Rot in hell, all us fuckers. |

How I wish I could surrender my soul; Shed the clothes that become my skin; See the liar that burns within my needing. How I wish I'd chosen darkness from cold. How I wish I had screamed out loud, Instead I've found no meaning. |
